Default Unanswered: Importing pointclouds

Hello,

I have tryed to import .asc files (pointcloud data) into 3DVIA Composer with no luck. File itself have been cleaned so there are only points location data in file and nothing else. Also I have tried to import Catia part file, where the pointcloud have been imported via DSE license. I am using 3DVIA V6R2012x version. Anyone have any ideas how to import pointclouds into Composer?

You can find free editing and viewing software from here:

Some sample pointclouds can be found from:

I filed a call on that one back when it was Seemage.. Composer just doesn't support actors that are points.

Thank you, didn't know that composer doesn't support points as actors.

I managed to import pointclouds into Composer, but the problem is that every point is an actor. So you really can't handle massive pointclouds in composer projects.

Not sure why you'd like to get point clouds in Composer... Note that in the 3DVIA product family you can drag & drop and visualize .asc point cloud files in 3DVIA Studio Pro. Works also with the free version ("3DVIA Studio Public Beta"): http://www.3dvia.com/studio.

In our case, we had a vendor send us a point cloud taken off a CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine), and we wanted to overlay the CMM data over the Composer model of the casting to visualize the results.

Reason why I wanted to import pointcloud is to visualize the modeling done in factory settings. Most of the clients want to know why is it necessary to use laserscanning and in this case the composer is the tool that client wants to use. I could easily use Catias own tools for making a short film, but like I stated, this was not my call.

First I imported pointclouds into Catia. They were in ascii-format with rgb and other information, but if you use cgo file format instead of ascii (Catia doesn't mind to use other settings for opening files).
Then I saved the whole thing after modifying pointcloud into Catia part and opened it to Composer, just remember to tick points when opening the part file. You can use the free software that I mentioned:

To modify pointcloud data, as in what informaiton you want to relay to different file. With this tool you can remove rgb or other data from the file, works better than excel or notepad ++ .
